This is Part 11 of the AEO Playbook, a step-by-step method to reverse-engineer competitor citations and rebuild the winning pattern on your own pages.

That means citation ground is contested every quarter. Studying the current winners is more useful than following a static playbook because the pattern updates as Google's ranking model updates.

Identify the target queries

Step 1: Identify the target queries.
Start with 10 to 20 queries where you want citation.
Category queries ("best CRM for B2B SaaS"), comparison queries ("Amplitude vs Mixpanel"), and how-to queries ("how to reduce Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)").
Prioritize queries with high monthly search volume plus buyer intent.
Step 2: Capture the current AIO sources.

Log the 3 to 5 pages cited per query.
Snapshot the AIO answer text and the source URLs.
Step 3: Dissect the cited page structure.
Open each cited page.
Note the H1 phrasing, H2 questions, answer-first paragraph length (typically 40 to 60 words), list and table usage, and total word count.

Duplicating the exact page will not win.
Adding one unique data point, one original framework, or one credibility signal that the cited pages lack often wins.
What competitor pages should you dissect first?
The competitor pages to dissect first are the pages currently cited for your highest-value 5 queries.
Pick queries where AIO citation would drive the most Marketing Qualified Leads (MQLs) or Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs).
Study 3 pages per query, so 15 pages total in the first sprint.
Pattern to look for across the 15 pages:
Common H2 phrasings.
AIO extracts answer-first paragraphs after question-based H2s.
Common answer-first paragraph length, it is usually 40 to 60 words.
Common list and table usage, AIO extracts structured formats more easily than prose.
Common source authority to understand which pages cite tier-one authorities (McKinsey, HubSpot, Ahrefs, industry associations).
Common publish and update cadence. Fresher pages usually win. Sub-6-month refresh cadence is the pattern.
How do you build the AIO Citation Gap Sheet?
The AIO Citation Gap Sheet is a spreadsheet mapping every target query to the currently-cited pages, the winning pattern, and your gap versus the pattern.
Ten columns: query, monthly volume, buyer intent (top/mid/bottom), cited page 1 URL, cited page 2 URL, cited page 3 URL, winning pattern (H2 style, paragraph length, list count), entity signals present, your current gap, action item.
Build the sheet once per quarter. Update the "cited pages" columns monthly because AIO sources change frequently.

[1] Study 15 competitor cited pages this quarter. Studying more than 15 in a single sprint dilutes the pattern-recognition. Fifteen is enough to see the winning template.
