Start with AEO Playbook Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5 if you are new to the series.

Entity authority is the third pillar of AEO citation. Structure gets your content extracted. Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) makes it trusted. Entity authority determines whether your brand surfaces at all when a buyer asks the model a category question.

This is Part 6 of the 26-part AEO Playbook, going deep on how to build the entity signals that put your brand in the AI Overview citation set.

What is entity authority and why does it matter for AEO citation?

Entity authority is the recognition by Large Language Models (LLMs) that your brand is an authoritative source in a specific category.

AI models triangulate this signal across your website, third-party mentions, industry directories, and citation patterns from other authoritative sources.

A brand with high entity authority in a category gets cited when buyers ask about that category. A brand without it does not surface.

Entity authority is downstream of consistent publishing, cross-domain mentions, and category alignment.

It is not something you can buy in a quarter. It compounds over 6 to 18 months of disciplined execution.

The brands cited most often in AI Overviews are the ones that started building entity authority in 2024, not the ones optimizing content structure last week.

How do you build entity authority through topical clusters?

Topical clusters are the architecture that signals entity authority to AI models.

A pillar page covers a broad topic end-to-end. Cluster content covers specific sub-topics that link back to the pillar. Together they signal to Google and LLMs that your domain covers a category comprehensively.

The pillar-and-cluster pattern:

  • Pillar page: Comprehensive overview of a category topic like "the AEO Playbook" or "how to grow a Business-to-Business (B2B) SaaS." 3,000 to 8,000 words. Answers the top-level questions completely.

  • Cluster pages: Deep dives on specific sub-topics that link back to the pillar. Each cluster page covers one sub-question thoroughly.

  • Internal linking: Every cluster page links to the pillar page with descriptive anchor text. The pillar page links to every cluster page.

  • Topic coverage discipline: Publish only in your topic clusters. Sporadic coverage across many topics dilutes entity authority.

Use tools from the top 5 content marketing tools for 2026 and the top 5 SEO tools for 2026 to plan cluster architecture. Frase and Clearscope both offer topic cluster planning features designed for this pattern.

How do you build entity authority through third-party mentions?

Third-party mentions are the strongest single signal of entity authority. AI models weight external references from authoritative sources significantly more than owned content.

A brand mentioned by 50 industry publications, community discussions, and directory listings outranks a brand with 500 owned pages.

The third-party mention playbook:

  • Reddit: Get mentioned in threads discussing your category. Not paid placement. Real discussion by real users. Reddit is one of the highest-weighted sources for AI Overview citations across most B2B SaaS categories.

  • LinkedIn: Founder-led content and third-party operator commentary. Every mention on LinkedIn compounds entity signal.

  • Industry publications: Guest posts, product mentions, roundup inclusions in trade press for your category.

  • Wikipedia: Get a Wikipedia entry if your brand qualifies. Wikipedia is one of the highest-trust sources AI models cite.

  • Directory listings: Consistent listings across Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, Capterra, TrustRadius. Same category, same description, same brand name across every listing.

Track third-party mention volume and quality using the top 5 AEO tracking tools for 2026. Compounding is real. Every quarter of mention growth translates to higher citation rate three quarters later.

How do you fix category misalignment?

Category misalignment is the number one cause of poor AI Overview performance.

A brand is described as "Marketing Automation Platform" on Gartner, "Email Marketing Software" on G2, "Marketing Cloud" on Crunchbase, and "AI-powered Marketing Tools" on the homepage.

AI models see four different categories and cannot decide which one to associate with the brand. The brand disappears from AI Overview citations across all four categories.

Category alignment checklist:

  • Homepage headline uses the same category language as your top three directory listings.

  • Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, Capterra profiles all use the same primary category and same description.

  • Press releases and third-party mentions consistently use the same category term.

  • Product marketing materials use the same category positioning across sales enablement, website, and marketing content.

  • Author bios and About pages reference the same category consistently.

Audit alignment quarterly. Every time a new competitor enters your category or Gartner redefines a category, your alignment drifts. Fix it in one sprint before it costs you citations.

Final Words

[1] Audit your entity authority this quarter. Search your top three category queries in ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. If your brand does not surface in any citation set, entity authority is your bottleneck.

[2] Publish only in your topic clusters for the next 90 days. Refuse to write anything outside your defined category. Entity authority is built through concentration, not breadth.

[3] Fix category alignment across Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, and Capterra this week. Use the same primary category on every listing. This one fix typically lifts AI Overview citation rate 15 to 30% within 60 days.

Next in the series: AEO Playbook Part 7 goes deep on how to drive third-party mentions and brand consensus at scale.
