Welcome to the 246th edition of The Growth Elements Newsletter. Every Monday and sometimes on Thursday, I write an essay on growth metrics & experiments and business case studies.

Today’s piece is for 8,000+ founders, operators, and leaders from businesses such as Shopify, Hubspot, Zoho, Freshworks, Chargebee, Servcorp, Zomato, Postman, and Razorpay.

Today’s The Growth Elements (TGE) is brought to you by:

Hundreds of creators. Zero new headcount.

Every Shopify brand wants more creators posting about their product. Almost none have the team to make it happen at scale.

partnerUP is that team.

You guide the brief. From there the AI does what a roomful of coordinators would: reaching hundreds of creators, ranking them by fit, handling contracts and negotiation, paying on delivery, and tracking what each one drives back to your store.

You approve the talent and watch the content roll in. No agency retainer. No new headcount.

Your first two creators are on us. See what they bring back.

Thank you for supporting our sponsors, who keep this newsletter free.

Start with Part 6: how to build entity authority and topical clusters if you missed the previous chapter, or Part 1 if you are new to the series.

Third-party mentions are the strongest single signal in Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). Structure gets your content extracted, covered in Part 4.

Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) makes it trusted, covered in Part 5.

Third-party mentions are what determine whether Google AI Overviews and Large Language Models (LLMs) recognise your brand as the consensus answer in a category.

This is Part 7 of the 26-part AEO Playbook, going deep on how to drive brand consensus at scale.

Why do third-party mentions carry more weight than owned content in AEO?

Third-party mentions carry more weight than owned content because AI models weight external validation significantly higher than self-promotion.

A brand mentioned favorably by 50 external sources signals category authority in a way 500 owned pages cannot. The AI model treats external mentions as votes from independent authorities. Self-published content is treated as marketing material.

Google AI Overviews cite an average of 6.82 sources per answer. The pattern across categories shows a strong bias toward multi-source consensus.

Content on Reddit, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Gartner, and industry publications carries disproportionately more weight per mention than content on your own domain. This is the mechanism the third-party mention playbook exploits.

What is the Reddit strategy for AI Overview citation?

Reddit is the highest-weighted third-party source for AI Overview citations across most B2B SaaS categories. Reddit discussions, tool comparisons, and community consensus threads get cited disproportionately by Google AI Overviews.

The strategy is not spammy self-promotion. The strategy is genuine community participation combined with visible brand presence.

The Reddit playbook:

  • Identify the 5 to 10 subreddits where your category is discussed.

    • For B2B SaaS, r/sales, r/marketing, r/entrepreneur, r/SaaS, and category-specific subreddits.

  • Participate authentically

    • Answer questions helpfully.

    • Contribute to discussions.

    • Build karma through value, not promotion.

  • Get mentioned naturally in tool discussion threads. Real users discussing real tools. Not fake accounts. Not paid placements.

  • Encourage happy customers to mention your brand when it comes up naturally in relevant threads.

  • Track Reddit mention volume and quality using the top 5 AEO tracking tools for 2026.

Every genuine Reddit mention compounds. Fake or spam mentions get flagged and hurt your entity signal. Play the long game.

What is the LinkedIn strategy for third-party mentions?

LinkedIn is the second-highest weighted third-party source for B2B AI Overview citations.

Founder-led content, operator commentary, and community discussions on LinkedIn get cited when they carry authentic voice and topic authority.

LinkedIn also feeds into professional graphs that Large Language Models use for entity recognition.

The LinkedIn playbook:

  • Founder-led posting on category topics.

  • Encourage employees and customers to post about your category and mention your brand naturally.

  • Comment thoughtfully on industry conversations.

    • Genuine engagement compounds visibility.

  • Publish original data and research on LinkedIn.

    • Original insights get shared, quoted, and cited across the professional graph.

  • Track brand mentions across LinkedIn using AEO tracking tools.

LinkedIn mention volume compounds slower than Reddit but with higher quality per mention. Both play a role in entity authority.

What other third-party sources should you target?

Beyond Reddit and LinkedIn, five other third-party surfaces move the AI Overview citation needle materially.

Wikipedia. Get a Wikipedia entry if your brand qualifies. Wikipedia is one of the highest-trust sources AI models cite systematically. Meeting Wikipedia notability standards typically requires third-party industry publication coverage first.

Industry publications. Guest posts, product coverage, roundup inclusions in the trade press for your category. Every mention in a tier-one industry publication carries the weight of 20 to 50 self-published pieces.

Directory listings. Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, Capterra, TrustRadius, SoftwareSuggest. Consistent category listings with the same brand description and category term across every listing. Category alignment fixes are covered in Part 6.

Podcasts. Founder appearances on category podcasts. Podcast transcripts are increasingly cited by AI Overviews. Each appearance is a durable citation asset.

GitHub. For technical B2B SaaS with developer audiences, GitHub mentions, README references, and awesome-list inclusions carry substantial weight in AI Overview citations for developer categories.

Final Words

[1] Identify your top 5 subreddits and 5 industry publications this week. These are your third-party mention targets for the next quarter.

[2] Publish original data or research monthly. Original insights are the source material other people cite when they mention your brand. Without original material, third-party mentions cannot compound.

[3] Track third-party mention volume and quality weekly using the top 5 AEO tracking tools for 2026. What gets measured gets improved.

Next in the series: AEO Playbook Part 8 goes deep on brand profile alignment across Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, and Capterra.

Wishing you a productive week ahead!

I always appreciate you reading.
