Welcome to the 249th edition of The Growth Elements Newsletter. Every Monday and sometimes on Thursday, I write an essay on growth metrics & experiments and business case studies.

Today’s piece is for 8,000+ founders, operators, and leaders from businesses such as Shopify, Hubspot, Zoho, Freshworks, Chargebee, Servcorp, Zomato, Postman, and Razorpay.

Today’s The Growth Elements (TGE) is brought to you by:

Your employees are connecting AI to everything. Now what?

ChatGPT and Claude don't just answer questions anymore. Employees are connecting them directly to Notion, Linear, Jira, and the rest of your stack. The AI can read, write, and take actions on company data. Most IT and security teams have no visibility into any of it.

Harmonic Security Connectors changes that. It sits inline with every AI-to-app connection, so you see each call, control what data moves, and block destructive actions before they happen. Employees notice nothing different.

Start with Part 7: how to drive third-party mentions and brand consensus if you missed the previous chapter or Part 1 if you are new to the series.

Category misalignment is the number one cause of poor Google AI Overview performance across most B2B SaaS brands. A single brand described four different ways across Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, and Capterra will not surface in any of the four categories reliably.

This is Part 8 of the 26-part AEO Playbook, going deep on the profile alignment discipline that fixes this failure mode.

Why does brand profile alignment matter for AEO citation?

Brand profile alignment matters for AEO citation because AI models triangulate brand identity across multiple authoritative directory sources before deciding what your brand is and what category to associate with it.

When your Gartner listing says "Marketing Automation Platform" and your G2 profile says "Email Marketing Software" and your Crunchbase description says "Marketing Cloud" and your homepage headline says "AI-powered Marketing Tools," the model sees four different categories and cannot form a stable brand-to-category association.

Result: your brand disappears from AI Overview citation sets across all four categories at once. Not because your content is bad. Because the AI model cannot confidently place you.

Fixing category alignment is one of the highest ROI actions in AEO. It typically takes a single sprint of 5 to 15 hours to complete across the four major directories, and it can lift AI Overview citation rate 15 to 30% within 60 days. This is the fastest lever in the entire AEO Playbook.

Which brand profiles must you align?

Four major directories carry disproportionate weight in AI Overview citation signals for most B2B SaaS categories. Aligning these four alone captures roughly 80% of the alignment value.

  • Gartner:

    • The category authority for enterprise B2B software.

    • Gartner profiles are what enterprise buyers reference and what AI models weight heavily for enterprise category queries.

  • G2:

    • The peer review platform of record for mid-market and growth-stage B2B SaaS.

    • G2 categories are among the most-cited references in AI Overview answers for software queries.

  • Crunchbase:

    • The startup and funding database.

    • Crunchbase category tags and description influence how AI models understand company positioning and stage.

  • Capterra:

    • The SMB software directory.

    • Especially important for SMB and mid-market SaaS categories.

Additional profiles that reinforce alignment when maintained consistently:

  • LinkedIn Company Page description and industry tag.

  • Product Hunt listing category and tagline.

  • TrustRadius profile category and description.

  • SoftwareSuggest and other regional directories relevant to your Total Addressable Market.

How do you align a brand profile across all four directories?

Alignment discipline requires the same primary category term, brand description, and taglines across every profile.

The process:

Step 1:

  • Choose one primary category.

  • Pick the single Gartner or G2 category term that most accurately describes your product.

  • Use exactly this term everywhere.

Step 2:

  • Draft one master description, 40 to 60 words.

  • Includes the primary category, target Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), and one differentiating feature.

  • This is the description you use everywhere.

Step 3:

  • Update all four directories with the exact same category, description, and tagline. This is where most teams fail.

  • Someone updated Gartner in 2022, someone else updated G2 in 2024, no one updated Crunchbase since founding. The drift compounds.

Step 4:

  • Add or update secondary categories consistently.

  • Where each platform allows secondary categories, use the same secondary categories in the same order.

Step 5:

  • Update every 6 months minimum.

  • Every time a new competitor enters your category, every time Gartner redefines a category, and every time your product positioning shifts, alignment drifts.

  • Fix it in one sprint before the drift costs you citations.

What content marketing implications follow from category alignment?

Once profiles are aligned, your content marketing from the top 5 content marketing tools for 2026 must reinforce the same category language. Every pillar page. Every article. Every meta description. Every press release. Every LinkedIn post.

Content alignment discipline:

  • Every published piece uses the same primary category term in the H1, H2s, and first paragraph.

  • Product marketing materials, sales decks, and website hero copy all use the same category term.

  • Press releases include the standardized brand description verbatim.

  • Guest posts and third-party mentions from Part 7's third-party mention playbook reinforce the same category term.

  • Author bios link back to the same brand description and category.

This is what compounds. AI models scanning the open web for consensus on your brand find the same category term reinforced across dozens of external sources plus four directory profiles plus your own site. That consistency is what earns the citation.

Final Words

[1] Audit your Gartner, G2, Crunchbase, and Capterra profiles this week. Note the primary category, description, and tagline used on each. If any are inconsistent, fix them in one sprint.

[2] Draft one master 40 to 60 word brand description. Use exactly this description everywhere: directory profiles, press releases, sales decks, author bios, LinkedIn company page.

[3] Schedule quarterly alignment audits. Category drift is slow and silent. A quarterly 30-minute check prevents the drift from compounding into a citation problem.
